On International Human Rights Day, observed annually on December 10th, we collectively recall the fundamental values advocated by all nations for the benefit of humanity: freedom, equality, and justice.
However, the relentless suffering endured by the people of Gaza due to ongoing abandonment by the international community has demonstrated that these values remain mere slogans.
For over a year, since the outbreak of the Israeli military aggression, Gaza’s residents have been subjected to harsh and tragic conditions. Intense bombings, a suffocating blockade, starvation, widespread destruction, and deliberate targeting of civilian infrastructure such as hospitals and schools have turned life in Gaza into a daily journey of pain and suffering.
Despite this, the international community has appeared incapable of taking decisive steps to end this humanitarian catastrophe. The world has failed to implement concrete measures to protect civilians in Gaza, provide urgent humanitarian aid, and open crossings to deliver essential supplies such as food and medicine. Declarations and condemnations by states and international organizations have proven ineffective in halting the brutal Israeli attacks and lifting the siege imposed on the lives of millions living in inhumane conditions.
It is shameful to celebrate International Human Rights Day while remembering that human rights cannot remain mere slogans raised during global occasions. They must become tangible commitments translated into real actions on the ground.
The international community must bear its responsibility, exert pressure to end the suffering of Gaza’s residents, and guarantee their right to a dignified life free from unjust wars, blockades, and destruction. Accountability must be ensured for Israeli crimes, and humanity must prevail through the implementation of international court rulings without succumbing to U.S. support for the ongoing atrocities witnessed for over a year.
The international community's failure to stand by the people of Gaza must serve as a call for all of us and for all living consciences to push for an end to Israeli violence, hold human rights violators accountable, and work towards achieving just and sustainable peace in the region by restoring the occupied lands to their rightful owners.
