Empty Seats at Iftar Tables… The Suffering of Prisoners Renews with the Arrival of the Holy Month

International Interests | 22-02-2026

As the month of Ramadan begins, the suffering of thousands of Yemeni families intensifies. They continue to await news that could ease their anxiety over the fate of their detained sons, while political promises are repeatedly renewed without being translated into decisive practical steps.

The holy month, laden with the values of mercy and family reunification, arrives once again with many families welcoming it—as they have in previous years—with empty seats and unanswered questions.

In Yemen’s collective consciousness, Ramadan represents a time for the return of the absent and the mending of fractured relationships. Yet this meaning loses its shine for hundreds of families living between hope and fear amid the continued uncertainty surrounding the prisoners’ file.

As the implementation of prisoner exchange agreements continues to falter, the growing sentiment is that this humanitarian issue remains captive to narrow political calculations.

Despite waves of optimism that accompanied previous rounds of negotiations, slow procedures and the failure to complete or unify lists of names have eroded much of the public’s trust.

Observers argue that treating this file as a bargaining chip rather than an urgent humanitarian cause deepens victims’ suffering and prolongs their wait—especially given the country’s fragile economic and social conditions.

In areas controlled by rival factions, particularly in the cities of Aden and Hadramawt, calls are increasing to disclose the fate of detainees believed to be held in facilities not subject to clear judicial oversight. There are growing demands for independent and transparent investigations to uncover the truth and determine responsibility.

Local sources confirm that many families have yet to receive accurate information about the whereabouts of their detained relatives or to be granted permission to visit them.

Meanwhile, areas under the control of the Sana’a government have previously witnessed sporadic releases of groups of detainees through unilateral initiatives or partial understandings. Observers considered these steps a potential foundation for expanding humanitarian solutions beyond complex political conditions.

They believe that generalizing such measures could help create a more positive atmosphere and accelerate efforts to close this painful file.
The issue of prisoners and the forcibly disappeared remains one of the most sensitive matters in Yemen’s landscape, as it is directly linked to fundamental rights such as life, liberty, and human dignity.

With the advent of Ramadan, renewed calls are being made for urgent measures to resolve the prisoners’ file, viewing it as a necessary step toward building trust and laying the groundwork for any serious and sustainable peace process.
