Journalism Under Fire: Israeli Forces Continue Targeting Journalists in Gaza

International Interests | 20-08-2025

Amid the rubble of destroyed homes and the relentless sound of explosions, Palestinian journalists in Gaza continue to carry the camera and the pen as a last line of defense against the erasure of truth.

With each passing day of the war, the media community loses another of its brave storytellers, adding to the grief of Palestinian families who are not only losing their civilian loved ones but also the witnesses to their tragedy.

In this context, the Government Media Office in Gaza announced on Tuesday the killing of journalist Islam Al-Koumi, an editor and content creator who worked with several media platforms. His death raises the number of journalists killed since the beginning of the Israeli war on Gaza to 239.

The office stated in its announcement that the targeting of journalists is carried out in a “systematic” manner, stressing that these are not isolated incidents but part of a policy aimed at silencing the Palestinian voice and concealing Israeli war crimes in the Strip. It reiterated its strong condemnation of these ongoing violations against journalists and media professionals.

The statement also called on the International Federation of Journalists, the Arab Journalists Union, and press organizations worldwide to denounce these repeated assaults and to act urgently to protect journalists and hold perpetrators accountable in international courts.

Furthermore, it held Israel—alongside the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France—directly responsible for the continuation of these crimes.

In conclusion, the Government Media Office emphasized that protecting journalists is a human right guaranteed by international law, urging the international community and human rights organizations to exert real pressure to end the war, ensure justice for the families of the victims, and prevent the perpetrators of these violations from escaping accountability.

The ongoing targeting of journalists in Gaza, in full view of the international community, reflects the depth of global paralysis and silence in the face of repeated Israeli violations against the guardians of truth.

Despite scattered condemnations, journalists continue to face death carrying only their cameras and pens. The question remains: when will the world finally witness urgent and effective international action to protect media workers and end the culture of impunity that encourages Israel to persist in its crimes unchecked?
