Displacement, Starvation, and the Killing of Civilians: Israel Continues to Violate International Law with Impunity

International Interests | 19-05-2025

Israeli crimes against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip continue unabated before the eyes and ears of the world.

Human rights and humanitarian organizations have documented a new wave of systematic violations of human rights and international humanitarian law perpetrated by the Israeli army against civilians in Gaza. This escalation followed the release of American-Israeli soldier Idan Alexander—an event that many had hoped would mark a step toward humanitarian relief, but was instead followed by a large-scale Israeli military escalation under the name "Operation Gideon’s Chariots."

---

From Release to Escalation:

On May 12, 2025, Israeli soldier Idan Alexander was released in Gaza, raising both local and international hopes for long-awaited humanitarian relief.

However, within hours, the Israeli army responded by launching a new military operation involving ground incursions and heavy bombardment across the Gaza Strip, leading to an unprecedented humanitarian collapse.

---

A Horrific Toll in Just Six Days:

Between May 12 and 18, independent human rights organizations and medical sources in Gaza recorded the following:

564 martyrs as a result of direct aerial and artillery strikes, the majority being women and children.

122 deaths due to starvation and lack of access to medical care and basic necessities amid a total siege that has lasted over 78 days.

10 mass displacement orders issued by Israeli military authorities, resulting in the forced displacement of approximately 300,000 civilians under inhumane conditions lacking shelter, water, and food.

---

Collapse of the Health and Food Sectors:

There is a total water outage in most parts of Gaza, with dozens of patients dying due to a shortage of medicine and the collapse of the health infrastructure.

UN aid trucks are either denied entry, delayed for hours then returned, or targeted in airstrikes.

Local reports have documented the deaths of infants and the elderly due to starvation, evoking images of historical siege-induced famines.

---

Clear Violations of International Law:

The mass killing of civilians and the targeting of vital infrastructure constitute war crimes under the Geneva Conventions.

The deliberate use of starvation as a method of warfare may amount to genocide when aimed at destroying a population in whole or in part.

Unjustified forced displacement of civilians represents a blatant violation of Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention.

---

Global Shock and Israeli Disregard for Agreements:

Following the release of Alexander, the situation was expected to improve. Instead, Israeli escalation shattered these hopes and escalated the humanitarian catastrophe:

No humanitarian aid was allowed to enter after the soldier's release.

The renewed bombardment resulted in the largest displacement wave since the war began.

The Israeli government's rhetoric has ignored humanitarian responsibility, continuing to describe civilians as “potential military targets.”

---

Responsibility of the International Community:

The tragedy unfolding in Gaza can no longer be ignored or delayed.

International law does not permit genocide to be treated as a negotiable issue.

Ending the killing, starvation, and displacement is a legal and moral responsibility for the international community as a whole.

Allowing impunity for such crimes opens the door to further brutality and widespread violations of human rights.

---

Urgent Call to Action:

Based on the above, Insan Organization for Rights and Freedoms, along with numerous human rights groups and civil society organizations, demands the following:

Immediate activation of international accountability mechanisms against the Israeli government at the International Criminal Court.

Imposition of deterrent political, economic, and military sanctions on all parties complicit in these violations.

Opening of safe humanitarian corridors under international supervision without delay.

Deployment of an international monitoring mission to document violations and prevent further escalation.

An immediate and permanent ceasefire, along with the unconditional lifting of the blockade.

---

Conclusion:

The current events demonstrate that the situation in Gaza cannot be resolved through military means.

Impunity fuels a perpetual cycle of Israeli violence.

The Palestinian people in Gaza can no longer endure this deliberate, slow death, and the international community must prove that justice is not selective.
